As the holiday season approaches, families are feeling cheerful and looking forward to all the parties and quality time spent with one another! But for your senior in senior care, the holidays can often cause feelings of isolation or depression when the rest of the family is preparing to celebrate.
You can help them, though!
Read our tips below and learn how to help your senior loved one feel included this holiday season and for many to come. Happy Holidays!
Remember the Past Traditions
Sit back, relax, and just remember the good old days with your senior this holiday season. Gather up old family holiday photos, home videos and some special holiday keepsakes from years past. Get the family together and share these memories with your senior. Spending this time reminiscing is a powerful way to help lift any feelings of loneliness that your senior may be experiencing.
Create New Holiday Traditions
New holiday traditions may be necessary for your senior in senior care this season. Here a couple of examples that will work better for their lifestyle:
Go to them. For the senior who has trouble leaving their home or lives in an assisted living facility, bring your family and the holidays to them. Plan a small gathering with festivities and watch your senior’s mood improve this holiday season.
Plan easy activities. Implement new holiday activities, like baking cookies or holiday décor crafting! These are ideal if your senior has difficulty participating in the more strenuous or physical holiday activities.
Virtual Holiday Inclusivity
Does your senior in senior care live a little further away from the family? Don’t worry, you can still get creative and find ways to make them feel included in the celebrations this year!
During the family party, try setting up a video booth or livestream. This will allow family members to chat with your senior throughout the event, all while your senior is virtually sitting in! You might also consider planning a post-event party at your senior’s location. Recreate the event by inviting other family members and sharing photos and videos from the event.
