And if you think that would be bad for you, your senior is much more sensitive to caffeine and how it affects them thanks to the aging process. Cutting caffeine will help your senior both lessen or prevent experiencing any of these side effects.
Caffeine consumption causes our bodies to produce and release cortisol, which is also known rightly so as the stress hormone. Increased cortisol levels cause symptoms like higher heart rate, blood pressure, blood glucose, respiration, and muscle tension. In order to decrease your senior’s chances of experiencing these symptoms, the solution is very simple: Reduce their caffeine intake!
Tips to Cut the Caffeine
- If your senior absolutely needs some caffeine, have them get their intake in during the day. Do not allow caffeine consumption later than 4 hours before their bedtime. This will help to ensure better sleep with no interruptions.
- Does your senior love their coffee? Do they rely on it in order to keep hydrated? If so, try introducing them to tasty alternatives instead, like fruit-infused water that can be equally as satisfying!
- Bonus! If your senior is stubborn and really doesn’t want to quit the coffee, you can try watering it down to hydrate more and dilute the caffeine.
