The Best Financial Advice for Family Caregivers

By , 10:44 am on

Are you a family caregiver? If so, then you know you’re responsible for caring for your senior loved one and sometimes even the whole family. It can be a demanding job but is also very rewarding! Still, it’s always a good time to take time now and then to stop and care for yourself as well. This includes getting your finances in order, a challenge many caregivers face. Take a look at our advice below and set yourself up for financial success!

Create a Budget

First, we highly recommend creating a budget for you and your loved one to stick with. This is an important piece of financial advice to keep you ahead of the game! Get together all of your current expenses to review, and then determine where you can cut costs and start saving. By setting aside a percentage of money each month, even if it’s small, you’ll see lots of growth over time!

Don’t Take on Debt

You may be tempted to charge any expenses for your or your senior on a credit card, but if you can, refrain from doing this. As you stick to your budget, you don’t want to take on any unmanageable debt, either. If you find that you do have to put purchases on a credit card, do your best to keep your balances low and use a low-interest card.

Keep Emergency Funds

It’s nice to have some wiggle room when times get tight! One of the ways you can keep comfortable when things get tough is by starting an emergency fund now. Contribute a small amount monthly to this fund, and if you ever have to draw from it, begin replenishing it as soon as possible when you’re back on your feet.

Prioritize Your Retirement Saving

Throughout your time as a caregiver, make sure you’re contributing to your IRA and/or 401k accounts if you have them, and even if it’s a small amount. Even though you’re always taking care of others, you’ll rest assured knowing YOU will be taken care of too when it’s time to retire!

Prepare Now for Your Senior Care

Consider investing in your own long-term care insurance now. As you age and it comes time for you to pursue senior care services, you’ll be glad you did this! Other preparation includes having any legal affairs in order, like living wills and advanced directives.
