Aging is inevitable, and with it comes a host of challenges that we may face, including the way we get around. Things like grocery shopping, running errands, and even grabbing the mail from the end of the driveway might become more difficult over time.
But that doesn’t mean we should have to stress over these tasks as senior citizens!
Instead, we should look at transportation alternatives to help our seniors in senior care.
Let’s first take a look at the reasons why some seniors would want to consider alternative transportation options…
Deteriorating Eyesight – Seniors suffering from an illness or injury that has permanently impaired their vision are unable to drive and will seek an alternate mode of transportation than driving themselves.
Decreased Mobility – Experiencing a decrease in mobility is common for seniors, whether it’s due to old age, an injury, or an illness.
Chronic Illnesses – Seniors who suffer from diseases such as arthritis, heart disease, Alzheimer’s Disease or dementia, and Parkinson’s Disease may find that they no longer have the ability to drive.
As a senior, and possibly due in part to the reasons listed above, your loved one in senior care might not feel comfortable driving themselves, or even navigating and relying on public transportation to get around anymore. Instead, we suggest that a caregiver or a family member help to transport them for their short-distance trips, like to the doctor’s office or to pick up a medication.
If you senior would prefer not to leave their home or they are immobile, consider handling the task at hand for them if their presence is not required.
Helping your senior travel longer distances requires a little bit more effort. You may face obstacles, like the cost of traveling for lengthier time or not having a caregiver or family member willing to drive long distances. To overcome these challenges, we recommend joining a transportation network that is specific to seniors. These networks are usually created to serve a particular region, city, or neighborhood and will help your senior to find the necessary transportation to travel long distances.
